Cave Story is a old-school style side scrolling adventure game by developers Studio Pixel. The game is free to play on PC. The game follows a silent android protagonist whose dialogue is only ever implied. Playing through this game has a great old-school feel and doesn’t disappoint. The 8-bit music will stick with you for days as well. The game’s visuals are very basic, but the cutesy art style still managed to reel me in. This game is definitely on the list of favorites for me, and the price isn’t bad either. When I first dove in to Cave Story all I wanted was a new NES game to play, and I was attracted by the price point. I got exactly what I wanted, and then some. Adding in save games an interesting weapon mechanics show how far games have come. At the same time it shows how little games need to offer graphically to be compelling. The story is told through dialogue and cut-scenes and many characters are given their own theme music. This helps you understand their character dynamic. For instance one of the main villains is a toaster (I think) named Balrog. He is quite aloof in nature. His theme music emphasizes this by being simple and almost silly during his dialogues. The music and dialogue work together to convey meaning that would normally be lost with the lack of graphics. The game-play itself is simple, but it gets more intricate as you progress. Each gun has it’s own properties and as you collect experience items while having the gun equipped they get stronger. When you take damage you lose health and experience at once, and so getting hit is not only killing you but its making it harder for you to kill back. This mechanic is actually one I’m familiar with from a classic game called ‘Blaster Master.’ It was just as brilliant then as it is now, and adds an interesting dynamic. It makes weapon switching not only based on preference but a necessity. On the hardest difficulty you can be killed quite easily also. Bosses quickly become a trial and error and pattern learning process. This is not only challenging but rewarding as well. As you reach deeper into the game new guns also unlock added mobility that gives access to new areas were previously inaccessible. These unreachable areas are dangled in front of you long before you’re given the gun to reach them and you see them multiple times. Elements like this encourage the player to explore and adds motivation to push forward. The pacing was staggered at times since exploring was a large part of the game. However the game does well to nudge you in the right direction and comes equipped with a map should you ever lose your way. Cave Story is yet another fabulous game that pulls at my nostalgic heart strings. Its a hard one to put down once I get going and the soundtrack is 8-bit goodness...

The second wave of DLC for Final Fantasy XIII-2 is on it’s way. The first announced bit of downloadable content for the game was done back in late December when Square revealed that both Serah and Noel, the game’s protagonists, would be getting their own set of alternate costumes. The next wave of FFXIII-2 DLC will feature a bikini outfit for Serah and a Sazh episode. Interesting. Both DLC packs are due for release on February 28th, and will be priced accordingly: Alternate costumes: ¥300 yen, or $4 US dollars on PSN, or 240 Microsoft Points on Xbox Live. Sazh episode, “Heads or Tails“: ¥600 yen, or $8 US dollars on PSN, or 400 Microsoft Points on Xbox Live. *For a taste of what the actual Serah outfit looks like, check out this video, but you might be disappointed.
I have to ask, do producers or whoever is responsible for the final cut of a movie actually watch their product before sending it out? If they do, I wonder if they sit back in their chairs going, “This is craaaaaaaaaap.” Or, are they so close to their project that they don’t see the gaping plot holes, the shoddy dialogue and the undeniable, yet hard to ignore, lack of chemistry between any of the main characters? Of course, I’m referring to the new movie, This Means War, starring the adorably handsome Chris Pine and the incredibly sexy Reese Witherspoon. I won’t reveal any spoilers for those who still want to see it, but in all honesty if you want a good spy romantic comedy rent Mr. And Mrs. Smith or Knight and Day. I mean they pretty much stole every good scene from those two movies and inserted them into a highly unbelievable, formulaic plot that would’ve had me running for the door IF I hadn’t paid ten bucks for the ticket. So for the love of the Geek Gods, how can you take international spies, Mr. Blue Eyes Himself (the handsome Chris Pine) and the amount of money they had to spend to make the movie and come up with this? REALLY!

Well that’s a start. I don’t think EA got to my personal wish list for Madden 13, but knowing that they’re going to working with DICE and fine tuning the defensive game play is a very slight breath of fresh air. I still feel a little asthmatic with the Madden games. Too many problems to talk about to the point I can’t breathe. Someone get me an albuterol! stat! Electronic Arts chief creative officer Richard Hilleman has the following to say: “They are doing big things this year. They’re making big changes. Those are big changes that are going to break a lot of stuff, and they know that. What we’re after is a better defense that’s more fun to play.” Finally! A challenge! I adore pass happy Aaron Rodgers-type offensive games like everyone, but winning all the time does get a bit boring. The defensive side of the football has been long overdue for a revamp. I think the last time the defense got an upgrade in game play was with the Ray Lewis promoted, “hit stick” in 2005. Since then, the term “hit stick” has become a part of cult culture. NFL players even use the term when playing the actual game. Here is what else Hillman had to say: “The executive producer on the product line is Roy Harvey,” he said. “Roy’s been at Tiburon a long time. He did NCAA, so he knows the product and the system really well. Roy was also building a lot of the online back-end systems that supported Madden and the ancillary and flanker products that helped it, so he was being brought into the team where he’s a pretty well understood player and he knows what he’s got. The Madden engine is an acquired taste that requires specific knowledge. We go through that all the time – I get phone calls I still shouldn’t get as far as I’m concerned. We brought Cam Weber on. Cam came from Fight Night and some other products. His cousin is Shea Weber from the Nashville Predators. “What I like about the new team is that they haven’t accepted any of the conventional wisdom about the product. I found that when I went down there a lot and talked about change I wanted to see in the product, I was considered a raving lunatic because I advocated more change than almost anybody else did. I would take bigger risks than anybody else. I think Cam is built out of that same cloth. His attitude is “what can I be,” not “what could I lose”…I think Cam will do some pretty interesting things in that space so I’m pretty optimistic. I’ve loved the people who have worked on that game over the years. “The other fact is Dale Jackson, who ran it for 14 years or something like that, he’s like 35 feet away. So in the larger scheme of things Dale is still around, I’m still around, Roy is still around, and a lot of the...

This is a completely new game, not an expansion, with new physics and gameplay elements, such as slow-motion puzzles and “lightspeed” destruction. Rovio GM Andrew Stalbow said both NASA and National Geographic will be launch partners for the game.
Tim Schafer has changed the gaming industry. He’s given power to the fans to support what they want to see, but at what cost? We all know TIm Schafer. What about the other Indy developers and designers? Hmm… think about it. What about the smaller games that we haven’t heard of, but should? Well, check back over to Teddy “Bear” Rose on his recurring GameFob column, Game-Aware. In less than two weeks, (kickstarter record) Double Fine has already raised more than $2 million to fund its old-school adventure game. This is a giant slap in the face to the big industries. With the target goal of $400,000 surpassed, Schafer promised his supporters and fans that this game will have great features and quality game play. With nearly 60,000 backers, the developer plans to use the additional funds to add voice acting, original music, localization, and more. Studio head Tim Schafer said last week the project, currently titled Double Fine Adventure, is coming (so far) to PC, Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android devices. Check back here on GameFob for more news on the matter. [source: gameinformer]

J has seen some inexplicable things in his 15 years with the Men in Black, but nothing, not even aliens, perplexes him as much as his wry, reticent partner.
They just don’t make them like this anymore. The Secret World of Arrietty They really don’t. In today’s CGI-laden, HD-happy cinema landscape, you’d be hard-pressed to find any full-length feature that doesn’t make use of the shiny 3D technologies that run ever rampant in our modern movie-going climate. But to be fair, The Secret World of Arrietty was released two years ago in Japan, and only recently found it’s way to American theaters this past month. This animated feature was produced by Studio Ghibli, which is responsible for some of the most beloved and truly fantastic animated classics such as Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle and of course, My Neighbor Totoro. Words could only begin to tell you how awesomely inspiring those last three titles were, so if you haven’t seen them, you owe it to yourself to watch ‘em and treat your mind to some of the most wonderful storytelling and animation around. The film is an adaptation of the Mary Norton novel The Borrowers, which is about a family of tiny, tiny people essentially squatting underneath the house of a normal human being. In order to survive, the tiny people, only inches tall, must “borrow” innocuous items from their normal-sized cohabitants (some sugar here, a little bit of soap there), all while avoiding the potential pitfalls of any living thing the size of an insect (animals, exterminators, birds of prey, you name it). The film, like the book, focuses on the Clock family; the father Pod, the mother Homily, and the star of the show, their wayward daughter Arrietty. Life is pretty routine for the Clocks: they eat their breakfast, they make their tea, they wash their clothes and they risk their lives at night so that they may borrow their essentials from the “human beans” as they call them. Arrietty, in her first borrowing, is discovered by Shawn, a benevolent and curious human boy with a heart condition. As Shawn and Arrietty begin to communicate (a big ass no-no among Arrietty’s kind for obvious reasons), things get complicated when Shawn’s nanny, Hara, suspects the existence of the tiny Clock family and crafts a plan to flush them out. First off, the animation is simplistic and easy on the eyes, a trademark of sorts for the geniuses at Ghibli. Yes, you can find Japanese animation syndicated on television that has tons more detail than this, but that doesn’t mean its better. In fact, there’s a very strong, very present beauty throughout the entire film that gives it a charm that cannot ever be drafted on a computer. A sort of old-school, feel-good vibe. Nostalgia aside, the characters are all superbly created, going by classical conventions. Arrietty is young and beautiful, and will look like the dozen other young and beautiful girls ever created by Ghibli. Her father Pod has a square jaw, a long mouth and a prominent nose. And then there’s the nanny Hara, who you can almost tell was going to be the antagonist from the get-go. It’s like there’s a rule among the animators are...

Back in the 8th grade, my English teacher assigned us a book to read, ‘Lord of the Flies’, that parallels the character study in ‘The Walking Dead’ (TWD). The 1954 novel by William Golding was a “What if?” scenario about a group of boys that were on a deserted island fending for themselves. It was a book about human nature when the rules that govern modern society no longer exist. If you read the book, you’ll know that the decision-making yielded some really bad results. This week’s TWD episode, ‘Triggerfinger’, mirrors that same power struggle crafted in Golding’s world. Last week, we saw the much needed return of a tough Rick Grimes in the episode as if he were Doc Holliday in the 1993 film ‘Tombstone’. That quick replay of the previous week when he takes down two men who drew their guns was an awesome display worthy of the “I’ll be your huckleberry” Holliday line. As a matter of fact, the lack of societal rules is giving TWD a western feel, especially with the earth (brown skin) tones of the presentation. The re-building of Rick Grimes to inevitably face off against the seemingly invincible Shane definitely pits the former as the underdog. The fact that most of the characters in the group are favoring Shane is playing to that illusion of Goliath. The fact that Lori Grimes is pregnant is helping to keep the group together so that we, the audience, can see the Rick vs. Shane boiling point some time in the near future. If the writers opt to diffuse this ticking time bomb of a conflict, it’s going to be a little disappointing in my opinion. There really needs to be a somewhat epic battle between the two superior characters, even if they’re friends. By no means am I asking for Obi Wan Kenobi vs. Anakin Skywalker at the end of Episode 3 on Mustafar. As a matter of fact, if the writers were to go with that scenario, wouldn’t it be possible that Lori Grimes may be sacrificed a la Padme Amidala? It makes a whole lot of sense for the drama to unfold. There was a moment in the episode that it seemed like the writers were going to sacrifice Glenn (Steven Yeun). Based on the character types and the balance of personalities, Glenn’s likability is enough to keep him alive. Then again, the fact that he’s already had his sex with Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and has oddly escaped death multiple times as the group’s runner makes it still a real possibility that he’s going to be sacrificed soon. I have one final thought on the Grimes family. That last scene with the both of them in the tent is reminiscent of Sean Penn and Laura Linney in Mystic River. The look on Rick’s face didn’t require any dialogue. It was a look that something dark is just beyond the bend, we just have to wait for it. ...

Bleeding Cool reporter Siike Donnelly is at Megacon and has gotten some news straight from Dan DiDio’s mouth that Wally West and Donna Troy are set to make return to the DC universe in the New 52. When they will be returning hasn’t been confirmed, but those of you who were rather disgruntled that DC decided to reboot The Flash back into the Barry Allen days, fear not! Your beloved comedic relief Wally will be back! Let’s also acknowledge the return of Donna Troy… who really isn’t missed at all. Well, if black-diamond studded leotards are your thing. That led us to a young man that asked about Wally West, to which of course I clapped and seconded. Dan and Eddie gave an answer that is going to keep me at bay with nerd rage for a while longer. He said because there were de-aging Barry, they didnt want him to be the same age as Wally. Plus they didnt want to take away Wally’s kids and family or make him a teenager again, especially with Bart already in that role. Dan also pointed out that someone close to him is a big Donna Troy fan, and Donna was given the same treatment when Wonder Woman was made younger in the relaunch. Their answer was that they are simply focusing on establishing the characters they started out with in this new 52, but not saying those other characters don’t exist or aren’t around in some way. They understand that everyone’s character is someone’s favorite. They just ask us Wally and Donna fans to be a bit more patient with them and those characters will be seen once more.

Parisot is most remembered for directing 1999′s Galaxy Quest which was a humorous parody of Star Trek. A film about a cult sci-fi show that is approached by an alien species which mistakenly believes their television show was real and seeks their help in order to vanquish an enemy. Red was such an enjoyable movie for me. It’s always nice to see Bruce Willis hold back “yippee kayay MFer” while he’s acting in his latest action scenes.
Muramasa: The Demon Blade is a high quality, artistic, and well designed game developed by Vannillaware. The game follows two separate protagonists through the story Momohime and Kisuke. Each with their own progression and bosses, setting it apart from most games immediately. Graphically the game is presented in an ancient Japanese watercolor style. Animations are fluid and beautiful, this game wowed me on a different level and shows what a little creative thinking can accomplish within graphical limitations. I’ve played through Muramasa multiple times always on the hardest difficulty. I was defeated many times while learning enemy patterns but generally the game isn’t terribly hard. Controls are very tight and easy to use. Creating effective and flashy combos on the fly is quite easy, and the combo meter is very forgiving. Creating large combos doesn’t offer more than the sense of satisfaction from making the numbers flash about, but it’s definitely going to be stuck in the corner of your eye. Once the combo meter breaks the 200 hit mark I dare you not to smirk. There are many different methods of attack and two different sword types. You’re able to carry up to three swords at a time and switch between them freely. If you wait long enough between the switch you unleash a full screen ‘quick draw’ attack that stuns most enemies and drives up the combo meter. Some swords even have unique attack sets, and there are a LOT of swords. This game is great for the completionist. There are tons of weapons you can forge throughout the game, and as you switch characters you unlock even more swords. Swords are unlocked through a tree progression and to reach more powerful swords you have to forge multiple swords before moving to the next part of the tree. The swords get progressively harder to unlock, and many are obtained only after defeating certain bosses which does well to throttle your progression through the upgrade trees thus preserving the game’s balance and pacing. Each sword has different stats, with two types of attack sets, and each weapon has a special art and sometimes a bonus effect that can power up your character in various ways. Also the individual campaigns of the characters is truly unique. Most games with multiple protagonists have the stories as nearly identical with only differences in personal motivation or character development. In Muramasa the characters don’t even progress through the areas in the same order. The difficulty is also slightly harder as the male Kisuke which actually makes sense in the game’s lore. Momohime’s sword style allows her to control the destructive power of the Murumasa blades. Kisuke on the other hand is wielding the blades while knowing that their use is slowly killing him. The stories are compelling and the characters sometimes intersect with each other although they have no idea who the other is. The enemies are similar throughout the game, though for each character their order of appearance differs greatly, and...

DC Co-publisher, Geoff Johns sat with Kotaku and discuss the future of DC character gaming. Johns talks about the success that Rocksteady has with Batman because they are so “passionate” about the Batman series. Johns thinks that the same can also happy for a Superman video game and like resident GameFob writer Eric Michael Bell points out… it’s hard to make a Superman game on Earth. Well Eric, Geoff Johns agree’s with you: About bringing Superman into video games: “We talk about it a lot, about how flipping up robots for four hours would get old,” he offers. About possible foes for a Superman video game: There’s been talk about adapting Johns’ Last Son storyline—where Kryptonian villains escape the Phantom Zone dimensional prison to plague Superman—because it delivers enemies who are credible threats to Kal-El’s power level. Cosmic tyrant Darkseid’s also been floated as another big bad for Clark Kent to face off against. “I think all games come down to gameplay and the right studio. I’m sure the right studio could crack it. Rocksteady has a real passion for Batman, and I think that’s why they make a great game.” What’s more intriguing than both Batman and Superman video games is that DC is going ahead with developing a “Suicide Squad’ video game. How about that? Don’t know who/what the Suicide Squad is? Click here. This idea seems to really excite Johns as it takes a different approach from superhero worship. “I’m really super excited about it. Because of the concept, you have a game where any of the lead characters can conceivably die and it’s not a stunt. Some really cool story could come out of that,” There has been no official announcement on a release date or which studio will be producing the title. Another little bit of information according to Kotaku is that the Suicide Squad movie is still a go at DC as well. Stay tuned here on GameFob for more news on the matter.

Spoiler-free, methinks. You’ve had a couple of days to watch this bad boy already. The second episode of the ‘River’ aired last night (Tuesday, Feb 14th) on ABC to attempt to scare the audience and their Valentine’s dates. While I thought last week that the river needed to impose some limits on its supernatural elements, it appears that we’re getting more. Another Amazon folklore drives this story forward, which is now predictably the new week to week formula. It’s not a bad formula, I just have a feeling that approach isn’t going to have legs unless the show moves out of the Amazon after this season to give the supernatural feel some diversity. Despite my one beef, I’m starting to sense a real character study at work, which is giving the show a nice added dimension. ‘The River’ doesn’t really do the ‘Lost’ thing by picking an individual character and dedicating the entire episode to them. The Bruce Greenwood/Dr. Emmet Cole flashbacks give us the consistent back story we need to drive the character development forward. The only drawback of a dedicated flashback is that it doesn’t allow the development of characters that weren’t around the Emmet Cole filming. The clear result is a primary and secondary character focus in this second episode. Clark Quitely, the TV show producer of the “Undiscovered Country” television series that starred Dr. Emmet Cole and family. In brilliant fashion, this second week started with a flashback to an episode of “The Undiscovered Country”, but transitions right into The Magus’ editing room. It’s here that the primary character development of producer Clark Quitely (Paul Blackthorne) begins. The writers throw in some romantic tension that’s existed between Quitely and Tess Cole from footage of “The Undiscovered Country” to the present. Since it’s only the second week, we viewers haven’t been given enough character investment time to care. Maybe later though. Our secondary character development focuses on cameraman A.J. (Shaun Parkes). He’s Ice Cube if one were to stretch the ‘Anaconda’ parallel. A.J. was briefly introduced to us as the picked-on photographer. He’s been picked on both weeks for his shoot-first (camera) approach. This week, we got to see his resolve and willingness to help the rest of the search team even in a failed attempt. Again, there are comedic elements that A.J.’s character brings to the show, and ‘The River’ needs a little bit more of it to balance out that comedic baggage it’s carrying. That’s all I got for this week’s episode. Hopefully the third week doesn’t follow my prediction of its formula and move on to the next folk lore legend. Hopefully it spends some more time on the Greenwood flashback.
