Transformers: Fall of Cybertron – Official Trailer Impressions
I’ve been a Transformers fan since my family migrated to the United States in 1986. My parents bought me an Ultra Magnus action figure, my only action figure. Don’t remember Ultra Magnus? He was supposed to be the successor to Optimus Prime in ‘Transformers: The Movie’, until the Matrix of Leadership ended up in Hot Rod’s hands before touching Ultra Magnus (that’s my quick take).
The Ultra Magnus toy was a copycat image of Optimus Prime.
My parents didn’t invest in my Transformers action figures too much, since I had a Transformers blanket, glow-in-the-dark pajamas, and some nut-hugging underwear. It was like Meg Ryan and her ‘Days-of-the-Week’ underpants in ‘When Harry Met Sally’ except cool. Right? I digress. Ultra Magnus was the only Transformer action figure I had growing up and I played with him just shy of marking the word ‘Andy’ under his mechanical foot.
I used to roll him around pretending he was Optimus Prime singing ‘The Touch’ by Stan Bush. I would repeat – “One shall stand…and one shall fall!” Of course we, TF fans from the 80′s, all know how that ended. Optimus Prime opted to have his optics shut down by Megatron after the Hot Rod interference.
Anyway, where the hell am I going with this post? I don’t know yet, but stay with me, maybe I’ll make it worth your while. Recently, Activision/Hasbro just released the official trailer to the upcoming ‘Transformers: Fall of Cybertron’ video game due in the fall. Haven’t seen it? Here, have a looksie:
One thing that pops out at me about the trailer is that music has come a long way since Stan Bush’s ‘The Touch’. I think that song was tainted because Dirk Diggler was trying to make money as a recording artist singing that once-cherished song.
The second reaction I had to the trailer is that it seems like the game designers are staying true to the original robot designs from the 80′s cartoon rather than Michael Bay’s live action versions. They’re much more recognizable to the TF fans spawned in the 80′s. That makes a happy Magnumb! Anyway, I hope this game looks as good as the trailer, but I hope it doesn’t fall victim to the lack of versatility that plagues Transformers video games. They don’t translate too well to the game world too well methinks.
